Facilities

 

Below is a list of equipment that the Bioadhesives Research Team has available to use:

For adhesive formulation

  • Chemistry lab for formulating phenol formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde up to 3 L per batch
  • A pilot plant reactor for conducting hydrolysis process under heat and pressure if needed
  • An 8 L size steam heating kettle for conducting hydrolysis process up to boiling temperature

For composite fabrication

  • A kiln for wood/wood flake drying
  • A large drier for fiber/other material drying
  • A blender for liquid resin application
  • A glue spreader for plywood resin application
  • A cold press of 12” x 42”
  • A Wabash press with 150 ton maximum pressure and 250 C heating. It can make board up to 15” x 15”

For composite testing

  • Wood shop for sample preparations
  • A Universal testing machine for most of wood composite evaluations
  • A pressure cylinder for wood preservative treatment
  • An environmental hood for fungi inoculation

For plastic/wood composite fabrication

  • A twin screw extruder
  • A injection molding machine
  • A Instron® for plastic evaluation
  • A impact testing device

For protein and other bio-material analysis

  • Protein (%) determination
  • Oil (%) determination
  • Ash (%) determination
  • A spectrophotometer with UV
  • Protein functionality evaluations

  • Thermal analysis
