Scientist I/Associate Scientist

The research engineer or scientist will lead all efforts associated with building and implementing a new business model for the CCUR industry assistance program focused on grain and biomass conversion into biofuels, industrial chemicals, biobased products and food/feed ingredients. This includes marketing technical and scientific services (both lab services and pilot-plant crop processing services), supervising new equipment installation, delivering technical assistance to industry and entrepreneurial clients, developing and implementing sound management/accounting systems for providing such services, training personnel associated with new lab and pilot-plant services, obtaining extramural grants and service fees, and converting new technologies into economic development for the state. The Scientist position requires a Ph.D. in a related discipline and 5 years of related experience. The Associate Scientist position requires a Master's degree in a related discipline and 5 years of related experience or a related Ph.D. and 2 years of relevant experience. Preferred qualifications are experience in pilot-plant processing of crops and/or biomass beyond Ph.D. training, experience with laboratory chemistry and processing of grain and other plant materials, and related industry or business experience.

 

Pilot Plant Manager

The Pilot Plant Manager/Supervisor (PPM/S) manages, coordinates, and supervises all activities of the Crops Products Pilot Plant to support the research, technology transfer, and industry services programs of CCUR. The PPM/S assists the Scientist I/Associate Scientist and Director with planning facilities operations and implementing those plans. The PPM/S supervises all personnel using pilot plant equipment and facilities. The PPM/S is responsible for installation of equipment, equipment readiness and preventative maintenance, scheduling equipment, equipment operator supply orders, equipment operation, billing for services, equipment and facility modification and refurbishing, equipment acquisition, and safety and security. The PPM/S manages revolving accounts for the pilot plants and the extraction services program, and assures financial solvency of those accounts. The PPM/S position requires a B.S. in Food Science, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering or closely related field. A Master of Science is preferred. A strong processing background with knowledge of chemical, mechanical and electrical equipment, systems, and safety is also needed. The ability to work with building and equipment blueprints and plans is required. Knowledge of the basic principles of food processing (i.e., milling, pasteurization, extraction) is required. Experience with grant and contract research is desirable.
