Associate/Full Professor Industrial Microbiology and FermentationDepartment of Food Science and Human Nutrition Application deadline is January 1, 2009, or until position is filled. OverviewIowa State University seeks applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Industrial Microbiology and Fermentation in the department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Qualified candidates at the Associate and Full Professor level will be considered. This position is 20% teaching and 80% research. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized research program with strong extramural support in the bioeconomy (biofuels and biobased products) and fermentation. Specific research areas that fit most closely with departmental plans include: fermentation technologies for converting grain, lignocellulose and syn gas to fuels and industrial chemicals; value-added fermentation co-products; invent technologies to create food ingredients from co-product streams; reduction of costs, water use, and energy in fermentation; fermentation technologies for new food and feed ingredients with enhanced health and functional properties. The successful candidate will be expected to lead research teams and coordinate integrated multidisciplinary projects; and will have a major role in leading the Iowa State Fermentation Facility and fermentation programs at the new Biomass Processing Facility of the New Century Farm. Multidisciplinay Research OpportunitiesMultidisciplinary research opportunities exist through the various centers on campus which include: the Bioeconomy Institute, the Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR), the New Century Farm, and the NIEHS Center for Research on Dietary Botanical Supplements. Start-up funds for research are available and additional start-up funds may be available from the Office of Biotechnology. Facilities available include substantial biobased products/food processing laboratories, fermentation equipment from bench to pilot scale, a high throughput microbial and chemical analysis laboratory, and core campus facilities for biological, engineerin,g and chemical preparation and analysis. CCUR also has multiple state-of-the-art processing pilot plants. The successful candidate also will teach and develop industrial and food fermentation and food processing courses, supervise graduate students, and participate in departmental programs including international activities. Working in the Fermentation Facility Fermentation FacilityThe Fermentation Facility is designed to help researchers develop new fermentation technologies and products and to provide pilot scale and benchtop scale fermentation equipment. The facility has equipment for the production of industrially important chemicals, chemical feedstocks, genetically modified organisms, and enzymes.
