The Iowa State University Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR) is offering the Industrial Fermentation and Downstream Processing Workshop, a three-day workshop that will cover the basics of bench- and pilot-scale fermentation and downstream processing. It will be held May 14-16 at CCUR and the BioCentury Research Farm.
The workshop will provide participants with real-world industrial fermentation experiences ranging from fermentation scale up to downstream processing. Participants will take part in hands-on bench- and pilot-scale activities led by Iowa State's fermentation and downstream processing experts.
The activities will include:
- Bench-scale Fermentation: Fermenter assembly and setup, medium preparation, probes calibration, inoculation, sampling and cell density/substrate analysis.
- Large-scale Fermentation: Fermenter vessel setup, utility lines and structure, medium preparation, probes calibration, sterilization-in-place, inoculation and sampling.
- Downstream Processing: Fermentation broth collection, tangential flow filtration for cell concentration, continuous centrifugation for cell harvest and spray drying for dry biomass preparation.
Depending on the participants’ backgrounds and preferences, the workshop will provide an anaerobic fermentation (Lactobacillus or yeast) and an aerobic fermentation (E. coli) in parallel. Each fermentation session will cover the entire process (bench scale, large scale and downstream processing).
Registration is limited to 10 people and is open to anyone with a basic knowledge of small-scale fermentation but would like to learn more about fermentation scale-up. Professionals in the food and beverage, fuel ethanol, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries are welcome to attend.
The Industrial Fermentation and Downstream Processing Workshop is presented by CCUR and sponsored by the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS).
