Safi-Tech was selected to present their business plan concept to a panel of judges during the 13th Annual John Pappajohn Iowa Entrepreneurial Venture Competition being held August 30, 2018. Sep-All was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. Gross-Wen Technologies was featured in a recent article in Silicon Prairie News and Safi-Tech's research was featured in a Clay & Milk article.
From Clay & Milk. Safi-Tech has developed supercooled liquid metal particles that allow manufacturers to solder on flexible substrates without the use of heat. The liquid particles are about one-fiftieth the size of a human hair and are filled with liquid metal. When popped, the particles release the encapsulated liquid metal which quickly solidifies, creating a solder joint. This unique process allows soldering to take place at room temperature. SAFI-Tech is an industry incubator client at CCUR.

Center for Crops Utilization Research staff and affiliated students attended the 2018 Corn Utilization and Technology Conference (CUTC) held June 4-6 in St. Louis, Mo. CUTC is hosted by the National Corn Growers Association and is a showcase for the latest in research into new uses for corn. Three Iowa State University students received funding to attend the conference from CCUR through a grant from the Iowa Corn Promotion Board.

Iowa leaders celebrate fifth anniversary of Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy at the BioCentury Research Farm, an ISU research team will use the pilot-scale pyrolysis reactor located at the BCRF to breakdown lignin that will be used to make the carbon fiber, and a former BCRF student employee accepted to CYstarters.

The Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR) and the BioCentury Research Farm (BCRF) hosted a poster competition April 3 for Iowa State University undergraduate and graduate students engaged in food, feed and biorenewables research.
Students enrolled in the new experimental course TSM 457X/557X Feed Safety, Ingredient Quality and Analytics worked in the Center for Crops Utilization Research Dry Processing Pilot Plant for a laboratory section of the class. They used a lab-scale ribbon mixer to examine mixer carryover.
The BioCentury Research Farm carried out new fermentation and distillation projects in the Biochemical Processing Train, Gross-Wen Technologies has joined the BCRF's industry incubator program, and researchers are working on an assortment of projects at the BCRF.

Iowa State University, in cooperation with the City of Cedar Rapids, has released a report identifying new, emerging technologies that could be a starting point for increased economic activity, jobs and start-up companies in the city’s agricultural and bioprocessing industries.

This partnership aims to increase cooperation and information exchange between faculty research and the City's agribusiness, food manufacturing and bioprocessing industries.
Hui Wang will receive the Professional and Scientific Research Award. Wang, a pilot plant manager in the Center for Crops Utilization Research, is an integral part of the center's success as a researcher, service provider and trainer for faculty and industry clients.

Iowa State's Martin Thuo, CCUR affiliate, and Michael Bartlett led development of a rubbery material that transforms itself into a hard composite when bent, twisted or squeezed. The new material could be used in medicine to support delicate tissues or in industry to protect valuable sensors.
CCUR says goodbye to two staff members: Peggy Best, administrative specialist, is retiring Feb. 28, and Darren Jarboe, program manager, has accepted a position at the University of Maryland. Last fall, CCUR welcomed Karla Long as the new program coordinator.
The Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR) and the BioCentury Research Farm (BCRF) recently completed a two-day review Jan. 11-12. The review is required every seven years by the Iowa Board of Regents to help ensure that each university center or institute is still relevant and consistent with the university's mission and strategic plan. A presentation on the review team's findings and recommendations along with a group discussion on next steps will be held Feb. 28 from noon to 1 p.m. in 1951 Food Sciences Building. All are welcome to attend.
The Iowa Corn Promotion Board has provided funding for up to 10 students to present their research at the 2018 Corn Utilization and Technology Conference (CUTC) June 4-6 in St. Louis. The CUTC brings together industry innovators from across the corn supply chain for idea exchange and discussion. Students have the opportunity to receive cash awards in the research poster competition, which has been won by an Iowa State University student the past two CUTCs.
Wurgaft Consulting and Development worked with CCUR to run a large aqueous vegetable protein extraction project. A food science and human nutrition graduate student completed a jet cooking project designed to simulate jet cooking with backset operations in commercial corn ethanol plants. Last fall, CCUR assisted a student team with their senior capstone project.
The BioCentury Research Farm hosted an Iowa State University safety training day for 16 new student employees and staff as well as current BCRF users. Also, the Bioeconomy Institute published information on their latest breakthrough in thermal deconstruction of biomass into biofuels and biochemicals called autothermal pyrolysis.
